Get involved in Makerhood

Makerhood Workshops smallWe’re looking for a designer!

Makerhood Lambeth site design, November – December 2013 (est 5-10 days)

We’re looking for a wonderful designer to join the project to help us make a beautiful site for Makerhood Lambeth based on Makerhood.com.

This is largely a volunteer role though we do have a small amount to pay the designer. To date we’ve had a great local designer as part of the founding project team – sadly they’re moving away, and so we’re looking for a new team member to join us.

Makerhood exists to promote making, creativity and skills locally. We do this by creating connections – between different local makers, between makers and local businesses, and between makers and the local community. We believe this is good for us as individuals and for our communities, our economy and our environment.  Have a look at our blog to find out more about our activities.

We’re a volunteer-run project that started off in Brixton in 2010. We have since brought together maker communities in Brixton and Norwood, and are now working to roll the project out across Lambeth. So we’re looking to adapt our existing site design at http://brixton.makerhood.com/ to work Lambeth-wide while having a strong local element.

It would be great if you were:

  • Based in Lambeth (or happy to come to Lambeth for meetings);

  • Interested in Makerhood’s goals of supporting creatives, sustainability and community issues – but also with appreciation of commercial considerations (as a key aim of the site is to promote makers’ work);

  • Have experience of designing websites and working with developers;

  • Have strong creative direction – you’ll be a full on member of our democratic team and we’ll look to you to suggest design and visual solutions (we do have a strong UX adviser and a project team with experience in digital who’ll work with you);

  • Available during November and December to work on the designs with us (this is flexible to an extent – let us know if you prefer something different), and able to commit for 5-10 days of working with us during this time (we’ll agree the exact time commitment before you start the work).

  • Ideally, you have some prior experience of Drupal and working on sites with a locality / geo elements.  Any coding skills, HTML and CSS are an advantage!

What you get in return:

  • Be part of a great team working on a new, radical approach to supporting creativity and skills in the community and promoting sustainable local economic models;

  • Make new friends locally;

  • Learn new skills working in a volunteer-led social enterprise setting;

  • Get a small financial reward (£600)

  • Get an example of a hyperlocal / social enterprise website for your portfolio

Examples of work involved:

  • Create visual designs for our developer to work with

  • Redesign the homepage to integrate new areas / enable a geographic selection of neighbourhoods

  • Expand our existing designs to accommodate new areas of Lambeth

  • Consider search and navigation across the site

  • Redesign the events section of Makerhood.com

You can get more involved in the project if you like and if it works well – the above is a minimum commitment we’re looking for for the Lambeth site design process.

If you think this is a role for you, please drop us a line at hello@makerhood.com by 23 October with a paragraph on your skills and why you’d like to work with us, and a link to your portfolio.  Or if you have any questions, please email us on the same address.

We look forward to hearing from you!
